About FieldTechPicks

FieldTechPicks is a small site about the networking gear small businesses and home offices actually run on: routers and firewalls, PoE switches, Wi-Fi access points, UPS units, and the cabling and tools that tie it together.<

Who writes this

I'm Rodney. I've worked in IT for over 25 years mostly as a freelance tech setting up and supporting networks for small offices, clinics, churches, home offices and many large retail brands.

I tell friends name a store and I have probably installed equipment there. I have been in many small and medium size offices. I have worked on most brands of network equipment. I have seen everything from Cisco, Aruba on the high end to TP-Link and Netgear on the lower end.

Why this site exists

Most "best router" lists are written by people who have never pulled cable through a drop ceiling or found out the hard way that a 16-port PoE switch can only power six cameras. I wanted a place that answers the questions small business owners and home-office users actually ask, in plain language, with the details that matter on the job.

How I pick products

  • I say whether I've used it. Every product page says either that I've personally installed that model, or that it's a spec-based pick. I don't claim hands-on testing I haven't done.
  • No invented reviews. Field notes on this site come from real installs. When I haven't used something, I work from the specs, the manufacturer's documentation, and how similar gear has held up for me.
  • Specs that matter, not marketing. PoE budget in watts, not just port count. Whether a "Wi-Fi 7" access point actually has a 6 GHz radio. Whether it's sold by Amazon or by a third-party seller.
  • No prices on the page. Prices change daily, so every product links to Amazon to check the current price instead of showing one that may be out of date.

How the site makes money

Some links on this site are Amazon affiliate links. If you buy through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That never decides what I recommend. The details are on the affiliate disclosure page.
